Where There's a Will....

The beauty of Facebook is you can keep in touch with friends who have spread out all over the country. Years ago, without the will to mount a massive letter-writing campaign, these contacts would have been lost forever. It is especially nice when this means of staying in contact allows you to help somebody far away.

Case in point: A friend of mine now lives in Austin, TX. He was going through a bad time in which a close relative was now on life support systems. Without a living will, the decision whether or not to terminate the systems rested with him. It was a huge burden, one he never wished upon anyone. So we began talking about finding a local law firm that dealt in living wills.

Through a little research (the internet is an amazing thing) and some recommendations, we were referred to an Austin Probate Lawyer, The Butler Firm. We immediately went to their website and discussed what they had to offer. Now, I'm no expert on the subject, so I'm not sure if being a Probate Lawyer automatically means they're an Austin Living Will Lawyer, but the two did seem to go hand in hand.

Well, The Butler Firm definitely did both. By all accounts they seemed to be a premier Austin Estate Attorney. From their website and the recommendations we'd received, my friend was sold. He felt like he had a huge weight lifted off his chest as he hung up the phone to go call them. I was happy to help a friend, maybe one who, years ago, I wouldn't have even been speaking to anymore because of geography. And, the whole thing got me thinking....

I've got kids, too. I never want them to have to make that decision. Maybe it's time to start researching a Living Will Attorney up here in NJ. We don't like to do it, but sometimes we need to think about the inevitable (a regular will) or the unthinkable (a living will) to protect our loved ones. I know what I have to do.
